Neptune 8.1 is here
Happy Easter
We are proud to announce the release of Neptune 8.1 ("Juna") the first service release of the Neptune 8 series.
This version comes with the updates provided by Debian 12.5 ("Bookworm") that offer the latest and greatest in terms of security.
We updated the Linux Kernel to version 6.1.76 to provide better support for modern hardware aswell as fixing some bugs with existing hardware support.
Neptune 8.1 also provides the newest Chromium in version 122.0.6261 as well as Thunderbird in version 115.9
Software updates allow you to enjoy the newest experience VLC 3.0.20 and LibreOffice 7.4.7.
Last but not least we now also ship with Plasma Wayland as session. This one promises a much more secure and fluid work experience.
As always you can find the new version on our download page. Existing Neptune 8 installations can update as usual via the Update Manager.
Neptune 8.0 "Juna" is here
We are proud to announce the release of Neptune 8.0 ("Juna"). This is the first major release of version 8.0 based on Debian 12 ("Bookworm")
This version comes with the latest major underlying changes from Debian 12 ("Bookworm").
The Linux Kernel has been updated to Version 6.1 to provide support for new hardware and better compatibility with current hardware. Additionally, KDE Plasma has been upgraded to version 5.27 along with all KDE applications present in version 22.12.3.
In Neptune 8.0, we rely entirely on the software management of Plasma Discover, which is now mature enough for us to provide it with Flatpak support and the Flathub repository. As a result, the package management tool Muon has been removed.
Other software updates include Chromium 115 as well as Thunderbird 102 and VLC 3.0.18.
As always, you can find the new version on our Downloadpage. Existing Neptune 7 installations can be updated through the update manager and will continue to receive security updates. An upgrade script will be provided later.
Neptune 7.9 Beta 1 available for testing
UPDATE:
As by our tradition Neptune 7.9 Beta 1 ISO is now available on time for Carneval. You can find the ISO here: https://download.neptuneos.com/dev/
This one comes based upon Debian Testing (Bookworm) with the latest Plasma 5.27 (Beta) aswell as Linux kernel 6.1.8. For the first time we ship Plasma Wayland as session aswell as Flatpak with activated Flathub repository for a vast amount of apps available for Linux.
Notice: This version is a bit bigger 3GB in size due to some apps relying on Qt5 libs and the default being Qt6. We are looking into it if we can reduce size further but did already do some tweaking to reduce the size.
Known Bugs:
- Btrfs installation end up with a read only mount after installation (this needs fixing in Calamares still)
- Kernel 6.1.8 has issues with AMD GPUs and external displays staying black after standby and wakeup (This is fixed in Kernel 6.1.9 and higher - Debian Sid has 6.1.11 already so it should be fixed soon)
Please visit our Forum to give us feedback.
Neptune 7.5 "Ada" released
We are proud to announce the release of Neptune 7.5 ("Ada") the first service release of the Neptune 7 series.
This version comes with the updates provided by Debian 11.4 ("Bullseye") that offer the latest and greatest in terms of security.
We updated the Linux Kernel to version 5.18 to provide better support for modern hardware aswell as fixing some bugs with existing hardware support.
We put effort in optimizing the performance of Neptune by providing tweaks to kernel that speed up the write speed on USB thumb drives for example.
Neptune 7.5 also provides a new solution for a complete system backup called Timeshift. It allows you to save a whole snapshot of your system and restore it even if your system is totally broken. You can even restore from a live system as long as you have the backup saved somewhere accessible.
Some slight tweaks make it easier to work on the terminal. We added the airline theme to vim to provide a more consistent experience together with our powerline terminal theme.
Software updates allow you to enjoy the newest and best web experience with Chromium 104 aswell as Thunderbird 91.12 and VLC 3.0.17
Last but not least an early beta of the brand new persistent creator is also included in the last ISO. Please be aware this is far from ready and only works with USB thumbdrives for now to create a separate partition on the drive. You need to manually bootup with "persistence" boot option to use that partition.
As always you can find the new version on our download page. Existing Neptune 7 installations can update as usual via the Update Manager.
Neptune 7 "Faye" released
We are proud to announce the release of Neptune 7 ("Faye") named after the member of the Bebop crew in the anime Cowboy Bebop.
This version comes with a new Debian base (11 "Bullseye") that offers newer and better hardware support as well as newer software and apps.
KDE Plasma 5.20.5 ships with a new Neptune specific theme that embraces the Breeze widget style for maximum compatibility and introduces a new subtle but modern flat look and feel to Neptune. We also updated the Icon theme to our own variation of the Tela Icon theme to fit with the new look of the system. The default panel has been modernized to allow pinning more apps and tasks to it aswell as offering a new bigger easier look to the eyes.
Besides that Linux Kernel 5.10 offers modern hardware support aswell as bugfixes.
We put effort in optimizing the memory usage on Neptune by fine tuning swap behavior. Instead of ZRAM we now ship ZSwap which allows compressing pages of memory before swap out instead of relying on virtual compressed swap space in memory. That allows us to activate Suspend to Disk again as long as you have a swap partition/space that is big enough. Overall it improves low memory handling also on low speced machines.
We also worked on little details and feature improvements requested by our users. So we offer now an easy way to open up the default file manager Dolphin as root user via right click. Image files can be easily set as wallpaper via right click on the file aswell.
With the underlying change of our Debian base many of our own apps had to be updated to use newer versions of the Qt 5 libraries. We updated the video encoding application Encode, Recffmpeg & KNetworkMounter. For some applications we decided to remove support like snapshot manager and persistent creator. Those applications were less and less used by our users and the effort to port them to the newer base made no sense anymore.
The new Debian base allows you to enjoy newer software versions of LibreOffice 7.0.4, Chromium 90, Thunderbird 78.14 and more.
As always you can find the new version on our download page. We also offer an upgrade script for users of Neptune 6.x. Please do a full backup of your system before you start the upgrade process and refer to the upgrade manual linked here.
The Neptune team wishes everyone Merry Christmas and a happy new year.

New Server online
Thanks to the overwhelming support of our community we were able to put a new server online.
This Server is now our download & repo server which is located in Düsseldorf Germany and is connected via 1Gb/s link which should provide sufficiant speed and enough space for new ISOs and packages.
Donation required (Update)
Update: We received around 595€/~642USD/527GBP of donations. We thank every donator and hope to get even a bit more for the coming years. The main download and repository server is still offline. Works on a new server will start soon.
We were told somewhat unexpectedly that the previous main server for downloads, repos and forums will be switched off at the end of this month.
Therefore I ask everyone who wants to support the Neptune project to make a donation to get a new server. About 500 € are needed to rent the server for 1 year.

Neptune 6.0 Release
We are proud to announce the release of Neptune 6.0. This new version is based upon Debian 10 ("Buster") and comes with the typical Neptune tweaks and configurations.
The base of the system is Linux Kernel in version 4.19.37 which provides the necessary hardware support. Plasma 5.14.5 features the stable and flexible KDE made desktop that is loved by millions.
New in this version is an improved display handling which allows switching between different output methods and can be handy for presentations. The lockscreen is now invoked when changing users. Plasma Discover is able to upgrade hardware firmware now and features a more modern and polished look and feel. New improved desktop effects and handling of compositing in the window manager KWin result in a better more fluid user experience. |
In terms of applications version 6.0 uses Chromium 76 as default webbrowser. The E-Mail application Thunderbird comes in version 60.8. Multimedia playback is done by VLC 3.0.7 and music management is still done by Amarok which comes in the current Git version which is build upon KDE Frameworks 5. Office work is done by LibreOffice 6.1.5.2 and Gimp 2.10 provides image editing capabilities. Editing of audio can be done either with Audacity 2.2.2 or Ardour 5.12. Videos can be cutted with Kdenlive 18.08.2. |
Neptune 6.0 is available as 2.4 GiB 64-Bit ISO you can grab from the Download page.
Neptune 5.x users either can upgrade with the help of an Upgrade Script to version 6.0,or can stay on Neptune 5.x as long as Debian Stretch is supported. Upgrading to version 6.0 only should be done after backing up your existing system.
Known Problems:
- 64-Bit Uefi Secure Boot might not work
- After running the upgrade script you have to eventually install mariadb-server-core-10.3 manually for Amaroks database to work.
(Amaroks database migration from older non kf5 versions needs copying of ~/.kde/share/apps/amarok to ~/.local/share/amarok)
